The drive used in the SY99 (and apparently the SY77 and V50 - neither verified by me) is a Newtronics/MITSUMI D357B 720Kbyte Floppy Disc Drive. This uses the older 26 pin floppy drive connector standard (which was often used in laptops), whereas all floppy drives now use the later 34 pin floppy drive connector standard. Allegedly, the 26 pin floppy disk ribbon connector socket was often confused with the 26 pin parallel interface ribbon connector socket on PC motherboards at the time, and the 34 pin socket avoids this problem. Replacement drives either are pure replacements (with 26 pin connectors) or require adapters (as with the Yamaha replacement drive described on this web-site). |
